Cookham Jubilee

Tom Copas

The Copas family have farmed around Cookham since the 1700s, and Tom knew from the age of 8 he wanted to follow in the family wellies.
Schooling was at Herries where he was a day boy in a girls’ boarding school! From there he went to Maidenhead college, Challow Court and St Pirans.

The Copas brothers began in his fathers time and only split up in 1999. Now he’s in partnership with White Waltham born wife Brenda, and Tania (one of 3 daughters and a son). Together they run Mount Farm, Kings Coppice Farm and Remenham Farm, and specialise in rape seed, wheat, and christmas turkeys.

Tom is busy on the national farming scene as president of the farm fresh turkeys association, on the Royal Agricultural society, and the worshipful company of farmers, which sounds very grand! “I wish people could see beyond the back of the supermarket shelf – to see where the food comes from.”

Tom says there’s nothing certain but death and change – he served for a time on the parish council and recently he’s been rebuilding his traditional horse and cart farm buildings into high tech offices for telephone systems companies, a training company, and a TV studio.

Tom’s delights are skiing, shooting, understanding the land and improving the view! “I hate NIMBYism!”
