In Flanders fields…

“In Flanders fields, the poppies blow between the crosses row on row” the opening lines in the 1915 poem by John McCrae.  I was inspired by the sentiment but didn’t want to use the crosses.  Instead I took an eye level view of the poppies and raised the tangled barbed wire above the viewers head – nearer to the view from the trenches of the First World War, hence the barest glimpse of rising hills in the distance. Another reason for the long thin painting.

The other things you’ll notice are the rusting helmet and the old leather football. This harks back to the famous game of football at Christmas 1914 in No Man’s Land during the Christmas truce. It also reminds me of the line from Sir Henry Newbolt’s  war poem “play up and play the game!”
