Cookham Jubilee

Bill Gibbins

5-billgibbins

Bill was born here in 1955 and has lived in Cookham ever since in the shadow of the gasometers.

“I miss those landmarks” (they were demolished in 2000) “I used to look at them from Cookham Rise school, when I was taught by Lynda Whitworth, and it was as if I could see my house.”

His dad worked at Shuttleworths in Bourne End and Bill’s first job was at Mace’s run by Mr Groves before it was Countrystore.

For 20 years now Bill’s been a fixture at Barnside Motors in the High Street delivering old fashioned and very welcome levels of personal service – filling cars and checking oil levels.

“I love meeting people but I don’t drive!” which is probably why you’ll see him out cycling in all weathers and finishing the day with a pint in the Crown.
