The Icefield Parkway is one of the World’s stunning routes. Halfway along is the massive Columbian icefield.
Don’t be tempted to drive past it with just a photo…. Take the amazing snow coach onto the shrinking glacier itself. You can see it as a dot half way up on the glacier, with some figure making their way on foot from the melted lake at the base…
It’s bitterly cold, even on the warmest of summer days as the icy winds blow off the enormous icefield behind the crest. This glacier is shrinking fast. The lateral moraines (huge grey outcrops either side) rise 300 metres – the height of this glacier less than a century ago.
I stood on the verandah of the visitor centre to paint this, used up all my white paint and had a terrible job getting some more in Jasper. Many thanks to Wendy Wacko, the artist, film director and gallery owner at Jasper Hot Springs who came to my rescue!
