Cookham Jubilee

Barbara Walmsley MBE

In the Queen’s birthday honours list ex Bourne End and Wycombe primary school teacher Barbara was made a member of the British Empire for “services to Cookham and to Oxfam.”
Oxfam has been a passion of Barbara’s since she was a teenager “I saw the photos of a famine in the Belgian Congo and realised not everyone in the world has enough to eat and I have plenty” so for the past 17 years she’s held an annual 36 hour fast outside Sainsbury’s in Maidenhead and raised over £100,000. “Collecting the money is the hard thing; the fast itself is a piece of cake!”

Her other fund raising has been through renting wedding outfits. All good experience to help her husband Charles in business management.

Barbara is pictured in the coat she wore at her investiture at Buckingham Palace – it’s an Oxfam special at £15.99 from Kensington high Street!

Barbara’s other interests include talking, baking and cooking and following Reading FC who got promoted to the First division this year.

“I love sitting down the front of the Majedski stadium as close to the action as possible and trying to follow Jamie Cureton, our top scorer who is so tiny and so fast on the ball.”
